The body of the new car was practically similar to the cabriolet introduced at the Francfort International Motor Show and built on the basis of the 220 A.The engine was the 220 S unit with 100 bhp which was not excessive as the open car was 60 kg heavier thanks to the reinforcement of the body. Three months later a coupé version was offered with the same mechanical elements. In August 1957 the Mercedes range was improved. The 220 S coupé and cabriolet received a new engine and a new "Hydrak" clutch. Visually the only changes were a new bumper and a new registration plate. From September 1958 onwards, the saloon, coupé and cabriolet engine was fuel-injected to become the 220 SE. Power reached 115 bhp while offering more mpg. Except the engine, the 220 SE coupé and the cabriolet bearing the factory designation W 128 were similar to the previous 220 S. In August 1959 three new types were introduced with finned rear wings. A small production of 220 SE coupés and cabriolets lasted until November 1960. From August 1959 onwards the two versions were fitted with the 220 SEb engine the power of which had been upped to 120 bhp. With only 5 731 examples, of which 1 942 were fuel-injected, the pontoon-bodied coupés and cabriolets are the rarest versions of the period. The car offered for sale had been thoroughly restored from the bare chassis. The body is finished in grey with grey-lined black hood (soft top) and bordeaux leather hood cover like the inner door panels. The varnished mahogany dashboard had been restored. White steering wheel and gear lever knob The mileage recorded is 34 421 miles (55 380 km). The Becker radio receiver is original. The whole car is in superb condition.
