Many collectors who like circuit or road racing are reluctant to drive original historic cars in event such as the Carrera Panamericana. This is the reason why the Gullwing Cars company located at Gardena in California builds on orders replicas of the 300 SL coupé with the accurate sizes of the original type. The running gear and mechanical components (engine, 5-speed manual gearbox, back axle and axles) are coming from a Mercedes AMG. The dashboard is a replica of the 300 SL one with VDO instruments. The car is fitted with a power steering and modern power disc brakes. The exhaust is through a side-pipe. The car has round Bosch headlamps, ogive-shaped mirrors, a Nardi steering wheel, a Blaupunkt laser audio system and a four point foam and leather-covered safety cage. The car is air-conditioned and glasses are shaded. The Mercedes 190 2.5 16S rims seem a bit out of place, but according to the mechanic of Rolf Meyer, they are compulsory in order to clear the brake calipers.
