At the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show the introduction of the 600 caused a sort of shock. Designed to be sold to the world's greatest VIP, the 600 was fitted with technical components which had never been used together on a car before.
For the first time in the Daimler-Benz history, an injection-fed V8
engine was used, giving 250 bhp and a 368 feet-pound maximum torque. With an automatic gearbox, this large saloon performed like a sports car. The "basic" equipment of the 600 comprised an air-suspension, power brakes, a central door and lid-locking system, an electrically controlled heater and a sophisticated ventilation system.
The seat adjustment, door opening and closing, sliding roof and glass control were hydraulically operated. The production started in
September 1964. Besides a 5-seat saloon (3 200 mm wheelbase) three Pullman versions were available on a 3 900 mm wheelbase : two Limousines and a Landaulet which was itself available in four variants. The Pullman Limousine was even more exclusive and the first example was completed in June 1965. It was the first post 1945 armoured touring Mercedes. Between May 1971 and November 1980, 43 "safety" cars were built and sold. These cars were built to customers' orders and there are not two exactly similar 600s.
Among these cars, one Pullman Landaulet was built for the Pope Paul VI and was used by two other Popes before joining the Stuttgart Museum 20 years later. Marshal Tito ordered some 600 Landaulets among which the example offered here differentiates from the Pope's car with six doors instead of four.
The car is finished in black with tan interior and superb wood trimming in rosewood. The rear compartment offers a bar cabinet and tablets with four crystal glasses and two jump seats. The Becker Grand Prix radio-receiver can be listened to at the front and at the rear (the receiver is inside the door pillar). The rear window can be blinded with curtains. There are a glass separation and a communication system between the front and rear compartments.
The instrument panel is fitted with an altimeter and an extra
ammeter. There are also flag-carriers on the front wings of this
Landaulet which shows 22 503 km (14 064 miles) on the clock and
is in good working order.
