First edition, illustrated with a coloured fold-out map and 18 etchings by the author, including a watercoloured costume plate. A descriptive work of Alto Adige and Tyrol. This edition is rare and the original illustrations by the author are more attractive than those by Rouargue in the second, more common edition. A very fine copy. Frédéric Bourgeois de Mercey (Paris 1803 - Château de La Faloise 1860) was a French painter, traveller, art critic and novelist. In 1853 he was appointed head of the Beaux-Arts department. In 1855, he was a member of the jury for the Universal Exhibition. He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1859.
