MEROVINGIAN OR LOMBARD HIGH KARAT GOLD MEDALLION WITH CENTRAL DECORATION OF CABOCHONS Ca. AD 600 - 800 . A circular gold medallion, featuring a central cabochon garnet surrounded by a ring of smaller garnet cabochons set in raised collets. The outer field is decorated with alternating applied gold elements in the form of stylised stars, all set against a textured ground. Fine beaded wire borders define the central and peripheral zones. Two loop attachments are soldered to the edge on opposite sides for suspension. The reverse is plain and slightly concave. Size: 48mm x 40mm; Weight: 8g Provenance: Private London collection; previously Denier collection, France 1980s.
