Harald Engman is known as the 'forbidden painter', partly because of the strongly anti-Nazi sentiment of his works, which, in 1943, forced the artist into exile in Sweden. In addition to his criticism of the occupying forces, he also portrayed the more humble aspects of life in 1930's Copenhagen; the city's pubs and life after dark.
