A Louis XVI gilt-bronze mounted, satinwood and amaranth meuble d'entre-deux, attributed to Martin Carlin
Although unstamped, this rare piece of furniture d'entre-deux, characterised by its impeccable quality of construction, can be attributed with certainty to the work of Martin Carlin, one of the most renowned cabinet-makers active in the second half of the 18th century.
Already used by the Oeben brothers, the rare herringbone marquetry in imitation of Hungarian stitch found on our example can be found on a number of pieces stamped by Carlin, such as a commode sold at Sotheby's Monaco (see fig. 1) on 13 February 1983, lot 504, and another sold at Christie's London on 25 March 1971, lot 85 (see fig. 2).
The gilded bronze ornamentation, particularly the bronze decorating the apron of our piece, is also characteristic of this famous cabinetmaker's corpus; it can be found, for example, on a stamped chest of drawers sold at Christie's New York, 23 October 2003, lot 587, the flap desk from the former Sanders collection sold at Christie's New York, 29 October 2019, lot 1120, or on the chest of drawers illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe siècle, Editions de l'Amateur, Paris, 2008, 169.
