MEXICO - MEXICO Republic of Mexico (1821-1917). Essay for Un peso "Caballito" by Charles Pillet, embossed edge, Frappe spéciale (SP) 1908, Paris. Av. ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS. Arms of Mexico on a crown formed of two branches, the eagle accosted by UN - PESO and ESSAI to the left. Rv. On a radiant sun, liberty mounted on a horse to the left, holding an oak branch and raising a torch, signature CH. PILLET and in the exergue (date), on the right ESSAI. KM - (Pn177 v.) - PL-03; Silver - 39 mm - 6 h Top Pop: this is the only graded example! PCGS SP62 (51896546). Very rare variety for 1908, with the edge in relief! Trace of a corner break on the reverse, with a black trace. Regular wear on reliefs and patinated fields. Superb with corner flower. In 1907, President Porfirio Diaz decided to mint a commemorative coin for the War of Independence of 1810. The Monnaie de Paris was approached and Charles Pillet carried out trials in 1907, 1908 and 1909. In the same year, the Mint received the coining equipment and the minting began in 1910.
