MEYER (Johann Heinrich). Ludwig Hees, Landschaftsmahler. Zurich, Orell, Füssli & Co, 1800. 12 pages, half cloth binding, small title label on spine (old boards, recent spine) (Period binding). Very rare first edition, decorated with a title vignette. The frontispiece portrait is missing. Biography of Ludwig Hess (Zurich, 1760-1800), a Swiss landscape painter and engraver. His engravings of Mont Blanc, following a trip to the Valais and the Chamonix valley in 1792, are of rare accuracy for their time. The Zurich Museum holds a drawing of the Glacier des Bois and an oil painting of the Glacier du Tour. On Ludwig Hess's work on Mont Blanc, see Samuel Nussbaumer and Heinz Zumbühl: L'iconographie des fluctuations glaciaires dans les Alpes occidentales et centrales au 18e siècle, in Climat et environnement, Société d'études du dix-huitième siècle, 2022, pp. 75-77. The work is preceded by a 4-page elegy (detached).
