A picturesque journey on the new road from Glurns in Tyrol over the Stylfs Pass (Passo di Stelvio), through Valtelline, along Lake Como, to Milan. Zurich, from the author, 1831. In-4° oblong, leaves in six issues in printed covers (cracks to spines of covers and small tears). Magnificent album on the Tyrol, illustrated with 36 etched and watercoloured views, a coloured title vignette and a fold-out map. The views drawn by Johann Jakob Meyer were engraved by R. Bodmer (23), F. Hugi (12) and L. Weber (1). The map was drawn by H. Keller.
The colour plates are very fresh. A very fine copy.
Johann Jakob Meyer (Meilen 1787 - Zurich 1858) was a Swiss artist. He apprenticed with the painter Heinrich Füssli. In 1812-1813, he worked for the Ostervald publishing house in Neuchâtel and stayed with the painter Gabriel Lory. An appreciated watercolourist, his clients included Frederick William III, King of Prussia, and the Tsar's family.
Very rare complete and in superb period colours.
