PROVENANCE:
Collection of Igor Dichenko (Ihor Dychenko) (1946-2015),
Soviet and Ukrainian collector, art historian and painter; one of the ideologues of the Ukrainian avant-garde, Kiev.
Private collection, Europe
Ukrainian-French modernist painter and scenographer.
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Mykhailo Andriienko-Nechytailo studied with Roerich, Rylov and Bilibin at the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts in St Petersburg (1912-1917). By 1914, he was already exhibiting innovative cubist compositions, notably Black Dome, and taking part in the International Exhibition of Graphic Arts in Leipzig.
From 1917 to 1924, he designed theatre sets across Europe, then moved to Paris in 1923, where he also worked on the films Casanova and Scheherazade. His work evolved from cubism-constructivism to surrealism, neo-realism and finally abstraction, with an emphasis on compositional precision and chromatic harmony.
His works form part of major collections, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
