Second, partly original edition of the Essays, containing the first two books revised and expanded. Published in 1580, the Essays were an immediate success. Montaigne never ceased to correct and expand its content. Only two years after the original publication, Montaigne has published a new edition with the same publisher, with modifications and a few additions, in attractive type that is finer and sharper than that of the first edition (Le Petit). A copy in complete conformity with the one described by Sayce, with the same pagination errors. A fine copy despite minor wear to the corners. An old correction in ink (f. D7), a few browned leaves (B1, B8 and sections P and Rr) and small scattered stains which are not serious. Provenance: Luch.
