The author, a Spanish philosopher and theologian from the second half of the 14th century, taught science in Toulouse around 1430, where he died in 1432. He was the author of several works, including La Théologie naturelle, in which he sets out to establish and verify all the articles of the Christian religion by human and natural reasons against the atheists (Montaigne). This treatise was highly prized by Montaigne's father, and it was out of filial affection that the great philosopher translated it. Once the translation was completed, it was printed at his father's express wish. The translation is preceded by a sonnet by François d'Amboise. A fine ruled copy, in a binding bearing the name Aubin on the first board and De La Noue on the second. The copy appears in the Techener catalogue of 1858 (II-6977) and in the bulletin n° 37 of the Damascène Morgand bookshop (nov. 1895, n° 27141). Techener indicates that the binding was made for Aubin de La Noue, probably a member of the illustrious La Noue family from Brittany. Beginning of a crack to a hinge, missing headpieces and a stain to a plate. Small paper loss on leaves A1 and Gg4, small worm holes reaching the last 20 leaves. Provenance: Aubin de La Noue (? supra libris).
