Allegory of Eternity or Venus in a Triumphal Chariot
Depiction against a black background with a young, female figure in a triumphal chariot, pulled by two floating cupids with burning torches. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by wealthy travellers and aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet was created in close imitation of an etching entitled "Venus" by Tommaso Piroli in "Peintures de la Villa Lante à Rome" (1st edition Paris 1803), which in turn reproduces a fresco by Giulio Romano created around 1520, which was once in the Villa Lante in Rome and can now be found in the Palazzo Zuccari. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. Approx. 45 cm x 60.5 cm. Frame.
Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.
