Michelangelo Maestri (active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr; Medea in a chariot Depiction against a black background with Medea in a chariot drawn by two horses, behind her a vessel with burning fire and a cloud of smoke as well as the hovering figure of Zeus, the father of the gods, with snakes in his raised right hand. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by wealthy travellers and aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present work was closely modelled on a fresco by Giulio Romano created around 1520 that was once in the Villa Lante in Rome. In contrast to this, however, the female figure was given a robe and transformed into a Medea by the addition of Zeus with the snakes. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. Approx. 45 cm x 60.5 cm. Frame. Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.
