Michelangelo Maestri (active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr;
Roman Servant with Tray and Pitcher
A figure in a flowing, light robe floating in front of a black background; a festoon frieze of grapes and fully bearded male heads on the base. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet is based on etchings by Tommaso Piroli from the multi-volume publication "Le pitture antiche d'Ercolano", which was published in Naples from 1757-1792 and later in Rome. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. 45 cm x 35 cm. Frame.
Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.
