Lot no. 1794
Michelangelo Maestri (Active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr; Roman Dancer A half-nude dancer floating in front of a black background, holding a silver plate in her hand and holding up her golden-yellow, flowing robe; in the base section the head of a bacchante and a pair of doves on a laurel festoon. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet is based on etchings by Tommaso Piroli from the multi-volume publication "Le pitture antiche d'Ercolano", published in Naples from 1757-1792 and later in Rome, which was also the model for a mural painting in the Villa Hamilton in the Wörlitz parks from around 1790. A sheet attributed to Maestri in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna (inv. no. SLM 401) also shows the same motif of the dancer. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. 46 cm x 36 cm. Frame. Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.
