Michelangelo Maestri (active around 1800 - 1812 in Rome) attr;
Two dancing maenads
Maenads floating in a graceful dance pose with flowing, light robes against a black background; two cats of prey and cymbals on a landscape plinth in the base section. The motif and style of the classicist sheet can be attributed to Maestri, who was inspired by the ancient frescoes in Pompeii and Herculaneum as well as Raphael and Romano. Many of Maestri's gouaches were acquired by aristocrats during their Grand Tour. The present sheet is based on etchings by Tommaso Piroli from the multi-volume publication "Le pitture antiche d'Ercolano", published in Naples in 1757-1792 and later in Rome. Gouache (over outline etching?)/paper. 46 cm x 36 cm. Frame.
Attributed to Michelangelo Maestri (active circa 1800-1812 in Rome). Gouache (over etching?) on paper.
