Comment: The sculptor's nickname Ungaro (or Ongaro) comes from the proximity of his birthplace to the Hungarian border. In fact, it was in Venice, where he arrived in 1644, that the artist began his career. Following in the footsteps of another foreigner to the Serenissima, the Flemish artist Juste Le Court, he was soon given a number of major projects, including part of the funerary monument to Doge Giovanni Pesaro, whose dragons can still be admired in the Basilica dei Frari. He worked at San Pietro del Castello and Santa Maria della Salute, and many busts of his are now kept at the Pinacoteca Querini Stampalia.
We would like to thank Mario Pintaric for suggesting that we attribute this bust to Michele Fabris, known as the Ongaro, and for his help in writing this note.
