Lot no. 173
[MIGIEU]. MANUSCRIPT, BURGUNDY WINES. Recueil de voyages en pièces concernant la géographie et l'histoire naturelle. Circa 1765-1780. Fort in-4, green morocco, two double gilt fillets, framed with gilt corner finials and central finial, cold-framed roulette, ornate spine, burgundy morocco title-piece, inner roulette, gilt paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges (Period binding). 663 pp, (11) ff. table. A fine, dense and legible manuscript. This is the second known copy (by the same hand) of the Abbé Tainturier's text after the one in the BM of Dijon. The text is known to have been preserved by Dr Barberet and published some twenty years ago by Bouchard. The author included two large plates in the frontispiece: the first, engraved by Huret, is an allegory entitled Physicus, depicting a gentleman crowned by doves and holding a cornucopia; the second, engraved by I.F. Cars, is an allegory of the sciences. He also illustrated his manuscript with a number of sketches in the text and included a large fold-out plate taken from a 1717 almanac. The first part relates journeys to various little-known regions (the Barbary coast, Cordoba, Canada, the volcanoes of Guadeloupe, etc.) or to Italy, France and Franche-Comté (p. 238). The collection deals with extraordinary animals (devouring locusts, camels that love music), curious facts (wines that have been kept for 160 years, p.16 the milky way; giants), miraculous remedies (wild valerian against epilepsy, vinegar or lime, p. 25 ff, Paraguay grass) and a few recipes (book XIII, p. 380: turnip bread, potato - book XXIV, p. 646: growing red truffles, morels, strawberries)... Some passages are copies of the text. Armorial and handwritten Migieu bookplate in fine. President of the Burgundy Parliament, M. de Migieu owned the château of Savigny-sous-Beaune, surrounded by vineyards. Provenance: Jacques and Hélène Bon. Binding rubbed, stained at foot. Spine darkened.
