Provenance: Collection of Maître Jean-Paul Croisier, Geneva, 1980s, (acquired directly from the artist), then remained in the family until the present day. Due to handling constraints, it has not been possible to weigh the sculpture. However, its weight is estimated, purely as a guide, at around 200 kg. Non-original hinges MIGUEL BERROCAL (1933-2006): AN EXCEPTIONAL AND MONUMENTAL WORK Produced in 1961, "Via Appia (Opus 50)" belongs to the series of monumental sculptures by Miguel Berrocal, pioneer and master of articulated, transformable sculptural art. This piece, conceived in his artistic language, reveals two distinct forms depending on its configuration, open or closed, inviting the spectator to an aesthetic experience in movement, at the crossroads of sculpture and architecture. This innovative approach, based on modularity and the interplay of volumes, makes Berrocal one of the great innovators of contemporary sculpture. The example presented here (no. 6/6) is distinguished by its prestigious provenance: it was acquired directly from the artist in the 1980s by Maître Jean-Paul Croisier (1938-2020), a renowned Geneva lawyer, collector and patron of the arts. Co-founder of the Association pour un musée d'art moderne (AMAM) in 1973, he played a decisive role in the creation of the MAMCO in Geneva and was close to many artists of his time, including Miguel Berrocal. The work has remained in his family to this day. By virtue of its monumentality, its dual configuration and its provenance, this bronze stands out as a masterpiece of Berrocal's work, bearing witness to a visionary sculptural quest and an intimate dialogue between art, mechanics and poetry.
