The present piece has been attributed to the artist and depicts a pastoral river scene with a grove in the distance and the blue sky rising above the deep horizon. As often seen in paintings by Mikhail Klodt, the present work also reveals the presence of human being in shape of two staffage figures sitting at the side of the river. Altogether, the painting captivates through the excellent technical execution and its fresh colors. The painting shows traces of an old label on the verso side of the stretcher. The work is in good overall condition considering the age; the paint surface has been cleaned and therefore reveals fresh colors, especially in the parts of the sky. The frame is also well preserved and measures 57 x 76 cm. The size of the stretcher is 40.5 x 58 cm. Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt von Jürgensburg (1832/33-1902) Born in Saint Petersburg, Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt von Jürgensburg grew up in a noble family of Baltic-German decent (known as Clodt von Jürgensburg). Between 1851 and 1858, he studied painting at the local Art Academy. His talent was quickly identified, so that he was sent as a fellow to Switzerland and France. In 1861, Mikhail Klodt was appointed member of the Academy in Saint Petersburg. After an extensive journey through Russia, the artist attended the Peredvizhniki (English: The Wanderers) in 1870. Three years later, in 1973, Mikhail Klodt was finally selected to become a professor at the Saint Petersburg Academy. His lyric landscape compositions deeply influenced the development of Russian art and may be found, for instance, in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
