Lot no. 236
Milan, Ulrico Hoepli Editore, 1896. Two volumes in-16° (pocket format typical of Hoepli Manuals). Editorial binding in full red cloth with gold titles on the plates and backs. Exemplars contained in the rare original green cloth-covered hardback publisher's slipcase. Italian Knightly Codex: Eighth edition. Work awarded a gold medal (1892) and diploma of honour (1894). Manuale del Duellante: Second edition. Awarded work with 27 illustrated plates in the text. Significance of the work: Jacopo Gelli (1858-1935) was Italy's foremost expert on fencing and matters of honour. The Codice Cavalleresco was for decades the normative text for settling disputes between gentlemen, while the Manuale del Duellante served as a technical and legal guide to physical combat, then still practised despite legal prohibitions. Bibliographical details: Publisher: Ulrico Hoepli, Publisher-Librarian of the Royal Household. Year: 1896. Illustrations: The Manual of the Duelist includes 27 illustrative plates. Conservation status: Very good condition. The red publisher's cloth is vivid and the gold embossing is clearly legible. The original slipcase, a very rare item to find, shows slight signs of use but is structurally intact. Interior fresh.
