On the fore-title of each volume: Stamped bookplate of the Tsarskoe Selo Library ( of the State in an oval linear frame surrounded by the inscription Tsarskoe Selo Library, stamped animal bookplate. CLAUDE-FRANÇOIS-XAVIER MILLOT (French: Claude- François-Xavier Millot (1726-1785) - French priest and historian. Member of the Jesuit order, professor of rhetoric at the Jesuit college in Lyon (1750-1758); however, for having praised the ideas of Montesquieu, he was expelled from the order. Chaplain to the King of Poland (1765-1766). In 1768, he was invited to the Duchy of Parma to help set up a noble military school. In 1777, he was admitted to the Académie française and, in 1778, became tutor to the Duc d'Enghien. Author of a number of highly regarded and often republished works on the history of Asia, England and France.
