THE VISIT OF TWO YOUNG WOMEN TO AN ASCETIC,
INDIA, PROVINCIAL MUGHAL SCHOOL, CIRCA 1750
Gouache heightened with gold on paper, mounted on a hardback album page with brown margins spangled with gold. Young women kneel on the grass, presenting their offerings to the dervish seated cross-legged on a tiger skin in front of his hut. In the distance, an architectural setting stands out behind the hills.
Several folds, wear and tear and a few small tears, some wet spots. The page is covered with a sheet of translucent paper inscribed with two lines in Urdu evoking the virtues of the dervish's life.
The number "6" inscribed in pen on the cardboard spine of the album page.
