Lot no. 70
[circa 1531]. 2 parts in one volume in-8, blue velvet, spine muted, edges smooth (Modern binding). Rare Gothic edition of one of the most important divinatory compendia of the Middle Ages. The first part of the work, written in Latin, consists of prophecies taken mainly from the manuscripts of the abbey of Saint-Victor. Among the authors cited are Bishop Bemechobus, the Sybil of Tibur, Saint Brigid, Saint Severus, Johannes Lichtenberger, Hildegard of Bingen, Savonarola, etc. The second part, written in French, is a brief anthology dating from the end of the 13th century. Sometimes attributed to the magician Merlin, it is set in the year 600, under the pontificate of Gregory the Great. It contains numerous allusions to the future French Revolution. The editio princeps of the Mirabilis liber is probably that of 1521, given by Jean Petit. Quite a few other editions appeared during the first half of the sixteenth century. This one was published by Ambroise Girault after he moved to the King David sign in 1529. He had published three editions of this collection in 1527-1528 at the Lion d'argent address, also in rue Saint-Jacques. Some of the typographical material comes from Guillaume de Bossozel. Light foxing. Moreau, IV, n°238 - Bechtel, M-360 - Caillet, n°7591.
