Edited by Pierre Matisse Gallery .New York, 1961. 32 x 24 cm.   Pierre Matisse, son of Henry Matisse, was an art dealer who developed his career in the United States, starting at the end of 1924, when he traveled to New York and was introduced to the market by Walter Pach (Manhattan, 1883 - New York, 1958), artist, critic and art historian. In 1931 he founded the Pierre Matisse Gallery in the city that never sleeps (which published the work presented here). He opened the gallery 'with a group show that featured European modernists, including Georges Braque, André Derain, Raoul Dufy, Jean Lurçat, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Rouault, and Henri Rousseau'. As stated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 'the gallery grew in prestige over the next five decades, mounting numerous important exhibitions, including Artists in Exile (March 3–28, 1942), which brought together fourteen prominent European artists who were living in exile in New York as a result of World War II'. Among the artists he represented were Balthus, Giacometti, Chagall and Joan Miró, the subject of our book. Matisse was, in fact, the one who introduced both Joan Miró and Balthus to the American public.
