A Venetian micromosaic and Murano glass mirror, late 19th century, attributed to Salviati By virtue of its monumental proportions and the finesse of its micro-mosaic decoration, this mirror can be associated with the work of the workshop of Antonio Salviati (1819-1890), one of the pioneers of the revival of the technique of blown glass and mosaics applied to glass at the end of the 19th century. Inspired by his work restoring the mosaics in the Basilica of San Marco in Venice, Salviati opened his first shop in 1859 with glass expert Lorenzo Radi. By the end of the 19th century, the company had expanded enormously, producing mosaics for Westminster Cathedral, the Albert Memorial and the Albert Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle. Salviati was also very active in the United States, where he produced mosaic portraits of President Garfield and President Lincoln for the US Senate in Washington. For his mosaic production, Salviati teamed up with Enrico Podio, a member of the famous Roman family specialising in the production of miniature mosaics and micro-mosaics. The Salviati company distinguished itself in the production of candlesticks, plaques, mirrors and, above all, tables in blown glass and micro-mosaics at the major Universal Exhibitions in the second half of the 19th century, winning a Gold Medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1867, a Medal in London in 1869 and thirteen medals at the Vienna International Exhibition in 1873. A mirror virtually identical to ours, with micro-mosaic decoration depicting the Rialto Bridge on the pediment and a gondolier on the lower section, is in the Tragor Ignác Museum in Hungary (Inv. TIM T.2005.36.1) (see Fig. 1). A similar mirror, combining a pediment decorated with the Lion of Saint Mark, fine garlands of floral decoration and Murano blown glass rosettes on the sides, sold at Sotheby's New York on 18 October 2016, lot 189, while a second, smaller mirror sold at Christie's London on 29 April 2010, lot 265.
