Modern and Contemporary Art Concrete Art Nemours, Aurélie Hommage à Otto Freundlich II. 1989. Silkscreen print on Johannot. 40 x 30 cm. Signed on the reverse. – A magnificent, richly coloured print with margins. Chauvineau 133. – One of 80 copies. - Printed by Fanal in Basel. - This cross-shaped composition forms part of Nemours’ consistently geometric-abstract body of work, in which she has worked exclusively with horizontal, vertical and right-angled planes since the 1950s. Like many of her works, this painting arranges simple forms (here: intersecting coloured bars) within a rigorously constructed underlying structure to reveal elementary rhythms of form, scale and colour. The stark contrast between the red cross and the blue field ties in with her ongoing exploration of primary colours and complementary contrasts, making the cross a condensed focal point of her central theme: the domination of pictorial space by the square and its derivatives.
