Modern Photography
Boltanski, Christian
Signal. 1995. C-print on Kodak Professional. 28 x 40.4 cm. Signed and numbered on the reverse. Mounted in places on backing board and beneath the passe-partout. - Slight scuffing to the lower left-hand corner. Overall in very good and clean condition. A magnificent, colour-rich print.
One of 100 copies. - Published by Texte zur Kunst, Issue No. 20, 1995, ‘Competition and New Norms’. - Boltanski applies his principle of museum-style recontextualisation to the medium of the newspaper by combining two photographs that clash abruptly: the bee on the flower as an image of nature and innocence, and the portrait of Marshal von Reichenau as a reference to war and militarism. The title *Signal*, which is also the name of the German occupation newspaper in Belgium, links the insect collector’s obsession with a belief in a supposedly ‘natural’ order, the apparent self-evidence of which Boltanski fundamentally calls into question through the randomness of his image combination.
