Lot no. 498
Modern Photography Lebeck, Robert Romy Schneider, Quiberon 1981. (2010). Silver gelatine on baryta paper. 24.8 x 37.2 cm (30.3 x 40.5 cm). Signed on the reverse and bearing the Griffelkunst stamp. – A magnificent print with a very dense, nuanced tonal range featuring deep and rich blacks. Copy from the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg e.V. (337 B5). - This edition, ‘Romy Schneider, Quiberon 1981’ by Robert Lebeck, is based on an iconic photograph taken in March 1981 for *Stern* magazine whilst Romy Schneider was undergoing treatment in Quiberon, Brittany. The image captures Romy Schneider in a moment of intense concentration and vulnerability. Lebeck eschews glamorous poses and focuses instead on the existential tension between the public icon and the private woman, marked by life’s trials, who described herself in an interview with Michael Jürgs as an “unhappy 42-year-old woman”. Within his body of work, the Quiberon series ranks among his most intimate portrait sequences, made possible by a relationship of trust that had developed over the years, during which Schneider called the photographer “Lebo” and allowed him great intimacy. At the same time, the work ties in with Lebeck’s photo-essays, in which – whether in Africa, post-war Germany or amongst celebrities – he sought not so much staging as the ‘decisive moment’ and the truth of a situation. This reflects Lebeck’s late-career mastery: photography that bridges the gap between photojournalism, psychological profile and iconic *Stern* portrait, whilst maintaining the delicate balance between intimacy and respect for the subject.
