Private collection, Berlin. – One of 10 copies. - This work depicts Nirjam Issah, a West African trader by name, in an outdoor warehouse in Hollywood, surrounded by traditional wooden stools and earthenware pots, as well as a weathered, orange VW bus in front of a light blue-painted wooden façade. The precise, address-like title is characteristic of the artist: by documenting the location, date and full name of the person depicted in a documentary style, he lends the image the character of a register and weaves together questions of identity, migration and the informal economy with the conventions of photographic archiving. The juxtaposition of African handicrafts and everyday life in an American suburb creates a subtle tension that neither exoticises nor idealises. – The Cologne-based photographer and conceptual artist Christopher Williams is one of the most significant conceptual photographers of his generation.
