This vibrant painting, produced in 1986 by Moke, a master of Congolese popular art, humorously depicts President Mobutu and King Baudouin parading in great pomp in Kinshasa. Cheered on by a jubilant crowd and escorted by swaggering soldiers, the scene is full of colour, noise and irony. With his trademark humour, Moke transforms political pomp into a lively street show, part celebration, part satire of power. Moke, whose real name is Monsengwo Kejwamfi, was one of the fathers of the 'popular painting' style in Kinshasa. His depictions of urban life attracted attention in 1965, notably when he painted a portrait of General Mobutu. As a chronicler of daily life in Kinshasa, Moke captured its energy, humour and humanity, becoming one of the most celebrated figures in Congolese art.
