Moke, whose full name is Monsengwo Kejwamfi, was one of the fathers of the "popular painting" style in Kinshasa. His depictions of urban life attracted attention in 1965, notably when he painted a portrait of General Mobutu. As a chronicler of daily life in Kinshasa, Moke captured its energy, humour and humanity, becoming one of the most celebrated figures in Congolese art.
