Lot no. 158
MONSELET Charles. Les Créanciers. A work of revenge with a cruel etching by Emile Benassit. Paris, René Pincebourde, 1870; in-8, vii-45-[1] pp. half red morocco with corners, spine ribbed, gilt head (Smeers). Partly first edition, not placed on the market and printed in an edition of 225 copies.
One of 25 numbered first copies on large-margin stamped paper, signed by the author, this one printed for Elisée Deandreis, deputy and then senator for Hérault under the Third Republic, a banker by profession and therefore well acquainted with the subject. The work is adorned with an amusing etching on the frontispiece: a horde of creditors swarming over the author, who is peacefully smoking in his bed. This frontispiece is in three states on China paper: black, bistre and sanguine.
A fine copy with large margins.
