In-4, fawn calf, triple gilt fillet, spine decorated, red edges (period binding). First edition in-4, decorated with a portrait of Montaigne engraved by Augustin de Saint-Aubin.
After the publication of the Essais in 1580, Montaigne spent six months in Rome. The text of his travel journal was compiled and annotated by Meusnier de Querlon from the unpublished semi-autograph manuscript discovered by Abbé Prunis in the papers of Montaigne's former château. The work, dedicated to Buffon, was published three times in 1774.
