MONTEUX (Jérôme de). Commentaire de la conservation de santé, et prolongation de vie. Lyon, Jean de Tournes, 1559. In-4, marbled calf, spine decorated, red edges (18th century binding). Very rare first French edition, printed by Jean de Tournes.
First edition of Claude Valgelas's French translation of an interesting treatise written in Latin by the Dauphin physician Jérôme de Monteux, seigneur de Miribel et de La Rivoire. Many passages in this "curious work summarising all the notions of domestic medicine and hygiene current at the time" (Cartier) relate to food and drink.
Copy of Pierre Adamoli (1707-1769), with bookplate and stamp of the Académie des sciences, belles-lettres et arts de Lyon, to which the famous collector from Lyon bequeathed his library and medal cabinet. The volume then passed into the library of the Dauphiné bibliophile Eugène Chaper (1827-1890), with bookplate and this handwritten note: Acquisitions at the Bréghot du Lut fils sale in 1863, Grenoble. Claude Bréghot du Lut (1784-1849), a lawyer and philologist from Lyon, was president of the Académie lyonnaise.
Copy incomplete of 10 leaves (ff. n1-4, s2-3 and Q1-4), epidermure on the second cover, head cover damaged, spotting and freckling.
