Lot no. 80
[MONTLUC (Adrien de). Les Jeux de l'incognu. Paris, T. de La Ruel, P. Rocolet, A. de Sommaville, a.o., 1630. 4 parts in one volume, in-8, garnet morocco, triple gilt fillet, spine decorated with small irons, inner lace, gilt edges (M. Godillot). Very rare first edition of this baroque collection.
The four parts of this satirical and facetious book contain Les Jeux de l'incognu; Le Herti ou l'Universel; le Discours académique du ris suivi du Discours du ridicule; and finally La Blanque puis La Maigre. The volume is decorated with a title-frontispiece engraved by Daniel Rabel.
This colourful book is attributable to Adrien de Monluc (1571-1646), Prince of Chabanais and Count of Cramail, Governor of the County of Foix, whose rather dishevelled literary work was rescued from oblivion in the 20th century by Iliazd, which published two texts from this collection: La Maigre and Le Courtisan grotesque, illustrated by Picasso and Miró.
A very fine copy, washed, glued and bound by Marcel Godillot, who practised under his own name from 1938 to 1975.
