Lot no. 224
MONTLUC (Blaise de). Commentaires. Paris, Jean Mejat, 1617. 2 volumes in one in-8, fawn calf, double gilt fillet, spine decorated à la grotesque, inner lace, red edges (18th century binding). A rare edition of these very important memoirs of sixteenth-century military history. A veritable "soldier's breviary" according to Henri IV, the Commentaires du maréchal de Monluc were not published until 1592, in Bordeaux, fifteen years after the author's death. They cover a vast period, from 1521 to 1576.
Small loss at head cap, lower jaws discreetly restored, some foxing.
