Lot no. 12
HIDDEN COCKTAIL WRISTWATCH Hand-wound mechanical watch in 18k (750 thousandths) yellow gold and platinum (900 thousandths). With a ghost dial, the hour-markers and dial blend into each other in perfect harmony. The hidden watch is only revealed when the flap is opened, on which are three lines of perfectly set old round brilliant-cut diamonds totalling approx. 1 ct. Two lines of 8x8 diamonds mark the end of the central part (1 broken). Beautiful purity and colour of the stones. Articulated bracelet with atypical slide clasp. Very good condition of the links. Eagle head and wolf head hallmarks next to the crown and on the flap. One of the hands is shortened. Functional at the time of the appraisal. Bracelet length: 17.9 cm. Gross weight: 75.4 g. Does a hidden watch seem like the height of elegance? In fact, it's a mark of evening decorum. Indeed, nothing was more frowned upon than looking at one's watch at a cocktail party to find out the time, the passing of time and what could be interpreted as a sign of boredom or impatience in the evening. A lady would only find out the time by going to a quiet place to powder her nose, because a shiny nose was not customary either. A woman in a cocktail dress would not sweat and would not have to pay attention to the time. If the lady was wearing a simple bracelet, then she could subtly look at the time thanks to her gold vanity case, a small box with compartments, which revealed the dial at the same time as the powder and lipstick.
