First edition. The atlas is remarkable for the luxury and beauty of the 29 plates created by Montulé, who was himself a painter. Among the most successful are two very beautiful views of the Kremlin. Very interesting observations on the organisation of Russian society and its openness to other cultures (It is in Russia that we will learn to distinguish the quality of French wines, especially Champagne, English goods, American furs; clubs...) but also its industrial and commercial ambitions (Half a century more and the Russians will no longer need Westerners...). A fine copy, elegantly bound (covers a little rubbed; a few spots on the atlas plates). Charles Baguenault de Puchesse (1793-1861; ex-libris) was a friend of Montulé.
