Lot no. 898
Monumental Meissen snake-handled vase with Boucher depiction and flower painting Ovoid body with retracted neck over a raised round foot with nodus, merging into a widely flaring mouth rim. Surrounding ornamental relief borders of egg-and-dart, reed and wavy and braided bands, partially on a cobalt blue background. Starting from the rounded shoulder, two spiralling snake handles rising from acanthus leaves in high relief. A large depiction of "Les douceurs de l'été" ("The Pleasures of Summer") after François Boucher and an engraving by Pierre-Etienne Moitte and an impressionistic floral arrangement of peonies on both sides of the wall. Virtuoso soft painting, executed by the Meissen figure painter Paul Voigt, active since 1898 or probably Prof. Julius Eduard Braunsdorf or pupil. Rich gold decoration. Designed by Ernst August Leuteritz. Inscribed "Les douceurs de l'été after Boucher / Paul Voigt" to base. Minimally chipped/above; crossed swords mark. H. 76 cm. J. E. Braunsdorf (1841 - 1922), who worked as a flower painter from 1862, broke away from traditional Meissen bouquet painting and towards the end of the 19th century developed his typical impressionistic, soft style, with which he had a lasting influence on subsequent manufactory painters and Meissen flower painting. He was appointed professor in 1900 and retired in 1906. Paul Voigt (1872 - 1945), brother of the Meissen manufactory painters Georg and Otto Eduard Voigt, was known for his masterful copies of paintings from the Dresden Picture Gallery. Described as a "self-designing artist" since 1910, the painter was honoured with two gold medals for his work. Cf. Jedding, pp. 144, 170; Berling, Festschrift, p. 109, Neuwirth, vol. I, p. 166, vol.
