Lot no. 151
Monumental mirror last quarter of 17th century gilded wood 200 x 175 cm The mirror, exhaustively described in González-Palacios's volume on 'Furniture and Ornaments at the Court of Rome', develops its decoration around a wing with simple moulding. The wood, carved with foliage motifs departing from a winged virile protome with a head crowned with flowers at the bottom, is partially lacquered with black paint. Acanthus crests gather at the top on either side of a tower, which, according to the scholar, could indicate a hypothetical provenance from the Giustiniani family, whose tower is one of the heraldic elements. As for the dating, González-Palacios likens it to a drawing for a frame adorned with volutes in the Tessin collection in Stockholm and datable to 1689, and to a notebook by Francesco Andreoli Giustiniani, in which appear collections of Roman frames very similar to ours, all datable to 1661-1704. It is therefore plausible to date the mirror to the last quarter of the 17th century. Restorations and missing parts are present. Provenance: Roman private collection; already on the antiques market. Bibliography: Alvar Gonzáles-Palacios, "Arredi e ornamenti alla corte di Roma 1560 - 1795", Electa 2004, pp. 98-99 (with photographic reproduction).
