MOTHER-OF-PEARL BOWL Gujarat (India), 17th century. A round, flat bowl with a pointed, wavy rim. The bowl consists of a framework of brass strips to which mother-of-pearl pieces in various shapes are attached with iron pins. The mother-of-pearl pieces are arranged in such a way that a stylized rosette forms in the center, while the underside has a geometric pattern. Ø 20 cm. Two comparable objects are in the Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. Nos. 4283-1857 and 4282-1857). When the museum acquired these mother-of-pearl pieces in 1857, it was initially assumed that they were objects made in Italy. However, documents from the Green Vault in Dresden prove that bowls of this type were imported to Europe from Gujarat as early as the second quarter of the 16th century. Die Schale besteht aus einem Gerüst aus Messingleisten, an das Perlmuttteile in unterschiedlicher Form mit Eisenstiften befestigt sind. Die Perlmuttstücke sind derart angeordnet, dass sich im Zentrum eine stilisierte Rosette bildet, wohingegen die Unterseite ein geometrisches Muster aufweist. Ø 20 cm. Zwei vergleichbare Objekte befinden sich in der Sammlung des Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv.-Nr. 4283-1857 und 4282-1857). Als das Museum diese Perlmuttstücke 1857 erwarb, nahm man zunächst an, dass es sich um in Italien gefertigte Objekte handelt. Dokumente aus dem Grünen Gewölbe in Dresden belegen jedoch, dass Schalen dieser Art bereits im zweiten Viertel des 16. Jahrhunderts aus Gujarat nach Europa importiert wurden.
