Lot no. 239
MURAT (Joachim). Letter signed "JMurat" as Governor of the Place de Paris, addressed to the Minister of the Interior Jean-Antoine Chaptal. Paris, 22 frimaire an XII [14 December 1803]. One p. 1/2 in-4, printed letterhead "Italie" with woodcut vignette depicting a medallion with a lictor's bundle amid flags.
"You are good enough... to give General Demars [Odon-Nicolas Loeillot Demars, 1751-1808, several times reformed, several times recalled to service] the hope that you would grant him a sub-prefecture. He has been informed that several of these positions are currently vacant. His former services, his irreproachable character and the misfortunes that have plunged him into distress entitle him to your interest and that of the Government. I beg you to distinguish his request from the crowd of those which are addressed to you, and to put it under the eyes of the First Consul, by reminding him of the particular titles of this general officer. You will add... to the rights which give you to my gratitude the kind manner in which you have kindly accepted everything which I have had the honour of addressing to you up to now. I have the honour of greeting you...".
