The painter and caricaturist Chrales Léandre (1862-1934) was an important figure in the life of Montmartre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A talented portraitist and patellist, he was best known to the general public for his caricatures, which appeared in L'Assiette au beurre, Le Chat noir, Le Gaulois, Le Rire, etc. In 1898, he came close to a diplomatic incident with his caricature of Queen Victoria.
