Paris, Charpentier, 1860; in-12, [8]-238 pp, modern brown chagrin binding, boards decorated with two gilt fillets and fleuron at the corners, smooth spine decorated throughout with gilt fillets and dotted lines, cover preserved. First editions. The first volume is an autobiographical novel inspired by the stormy passion between Alfred de Musset and George Sand twenty years earlier. George Sand had perhaps waited until the death of her former lover to publish the book. The second is the outraged response, again in the form of a novel, by Musset's brother Paul. In it, he presents George Sand as an unfaithful and perverse nymphomaniac. Love stories usually end badly...
