In-4, midnight blue morocco, boards decorated with a rich mosaic composition of irises repeated in rings of ivy in mauve, beige and dark green morocco, spine titled in cold, interior framed with two mosaic listels and cold fillets, silver silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, slipcase, cover (Marius-Michel). Luxurious edition illustrated with a portrait of the author after David d'Angers and 17 compositions by Auguste Gérardin, including 6 full-page, 6 headpieces and 5 culs-de-lampe, all wood-engraved by Florian. It was published in 550 numbered copies. One of 23 copies reprinted on old japon, nominative (n°4), containing an original watercolour signed by Gérardin and a double suite of artist's proofs signed by Florian. Sumptuous mosaic binding by Marius-Michel, with the label of the 1900 Universal Exhibition on one of the endpapers, where the bookbinder was awarded the grand prize. The suite of artist's proofs has been bound separately, also by Marius Michel, in midnight blue half-maroquin with corners.
