MUZIO (Vittorio). Opuscula quædam e quibus belli et pacis artes studiosus lector facile discere poterit. Pavia, [heirs of Girolamo Bartoli for] Giovanni Battista Vismara, 1594. In-4, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, spine decorated with a repeated crowned numeral, lace on the edges, marbled edges (17th century binding). A precious copy in red morocco bearing the arms and cipher of the great Colbert, with on the title the handwritten ex-libris of the Bibliotheca Colbertina (1728, II, n°10485). With the help of Pierre de Carcavi, Louis XIV's minister had built up a scholarly library that was famous throughout Europe. On his death, it passed into the hands of his eldest son Jean-Baptiste, Marquis de Seignelay, then his youngest son Jacques-Nicolas, Archbishop of Rouen, and finally his grandson Charles-Éléonor, before being sold at public auction between 1728 and 1732, in no fewer than 111 auctions.
