MYSIA, A GOLD STATER OF LAMPSAKOS, ca. 350-340 BC, 8.431g, 3h. JIAN 1902 (5) 9h = Baldwin 29s (this coin). Very rare. Attractively toned with underlying luster. A lovely coin with a powerful head of Zeus of the finest late classical style. Minor die-break on obverse, otherwise, extremely fine. Acquired privately from Spink; former Gustav Philipsen (1853-1925) collection, Jacob Hirsch 1909 (25) lot 1790 Lampsakos minted an important gold coinage in the fourth century BC, and all specimens had on the reverse the forepart of a Pegasus, the badge of the city. The obverse design changed with each issue and over forty different issues are known for the sixty years in which the city produced coinage. This issue has a wonderful bearded head of Zeus, here holding a sceptre woth a lotus-head over his shoulder. The changing types are slightly unexpected on gold coinage, and must betray the influence of the electrum coinage of Kyzikos. The variety and artistry with which the dies were engraved makes Lampsacene coinage one of the most brilliant Greek coinages.
